Our free SEO Audit Template helps you quickly identify technical issues, content gaps, and optimisation opportunities to boost your website’s performance.

Step-by-Step: How to Use the SEO Audit Template

Step 1: Make your own copy. Open the spreadsheet and go to File > Make a copy. Work through each tab in order, technical issues need to be identified and fixed before on-page or content work begins.

Step 2: Technical audit. Start with the Technical tab. Check that your site is indexable (verify there are no accidental noindex tags on important pages), confirm your site loads in under 3 seconds on mobile, check for broken internal links, and review your XML sitemap and robots.txt. A single crawl error on a key page can suppress rankings significantly, don’t skip this step.

Step 3: On-page audit. Move to the On-Page tab. Review each important page for: a unique H1 that includes the primary keyword, a title tag under 55 characters, a meta description between 140-150 characters, and no duplicate content across pages. Flag every issue with a High / Medium / Low severity rating.

Step 4: Content audit. In the Content tab, identify thin pages (under 400 words on a key service or product page), pages with outdated information, and priority pages that would benefit from additional depth. Thin content is one of the most common reasons pages underperform despite having some keyword optimisation.

Step 5: Backlink review. Log your total referring domains and note the Domain Authority or Domain Rating of your site. Flag any toxic or low-quality links in the notes column, these may need disavowal in Google Search Console.

Step 6: Core Web Vitals. Pull your LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), INP (Interaction to Next Paint), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) scores from Google Search Console or PageSpeed Insights. These three metrics directly influence rankings. LCP should be under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, and INP under 200ms.

Step 7: Prioritise your findings. Use the final tab to sort all issues by severity and effort. Fix High severity issues first regardless of effort. Then work through Medium issues in order of lowest effort to highest. This turns the audit from a list of problems into an actionable roadmap.

Important

Run this audit quarterly, not just once. SEO is a moving target, Google updates its algorithm, competitors refresh their pages, and your own site changes over time. A quarterly audit catches issues before they show up as ranking drops.

If the audit reveals widespread technical or content issues, our SEO services Sydney team can step in with a structured remediation plan. Once you’ve audited your existing pages, use the Keyword and Meta Planner template to map target keywords and refresh your metadata. After completing your audit, use the SEO ROI checklist tool to track whether your fixes are translating into measurable results.
