DNS Lookup

Step-by-Step: How to Use the DNS Lookup Tool
Step 1: Enter your domain name in the input field. Use the root domain, for example, example.com.au. No need to include http:// or www.
Step 2: Choose a record type (optional). Leave it set to All Record Types for a full overview. Or filter to a specific type if you know exactly what you’re checking.
Step 3: Click ‘Look up DNS info’ and review the results table.
What each record type means
- A Record: maps your domain to an IPv4 address. This is the core record pointing your domain to your web host’s server. If your site is down after a hosting migration, check this first.
- AAAA Record: the same as A, but for IPv6 addresses.
- CNAME Record: an alias that points one domain (e.g. www.example.com) to another (example.com). Common for subdomains and third-party services.
- MX Record: directs email for your domain to the correct mail server. If email isn’t being received, this is the first thing to check. Use our dedicated MX Record Lookup tool for a more detailed view.
- NS Record: lists the authoritative name servers for your domain, the servers that hold all your DNS records. If you’ve recently changed DNS providers, confirm the correct name servers appear here.
- TXT Record: used for domain verification and email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). Multiple TXT records on one domain are normal. If your results include an SPF entry, use the SPF Record Validator tool to check it’s configured correctly for email deliverability.
ImportantDNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate globally. If you’ve recently migrated your website or changed hosting and the A record still shows the old server IP, wait and check again, or flush your local DNS cache to see the current live state. |
If the DNS records look correct but you need to check domain ownership or registration expiry, use our WHOIS Lookup tool. If you’re seeing unexpected DNS configurations or can’t identify where a record is pointing, our website maintenance Sydney team can investigate and resolve it.
