MX Record Lookup

Step-by-Step: How to Use the MX Record Lookup Tool

Step 1: Enter your domain name (e.g. yourbusiness.com.au) and click ‘Look up MX Records’.

Step 2: Review your results. Each MX record has two fields: Priority (a number, lower means higher priority, so a server at priority 1 is tried before a server at priority 10) and the Mail Server Hostname (the address of the server that handles your inbound email).

How to interpret your results

  • Google Workspace: your primary record should be aspmx.l.google.com at priority 1, along with several alt1-alt4 records. Missing any of these can affect email delivery.
  • Microsoft 365: your primary record ends in mail.protection.outlook.com. M365 typically uses a single MX record.
  • No MX records found: your domain has no email configured, or the records are missing entirely. Email sent to your domain will bounce.
  • Old and new records mixed: if you’ve recently migrated email providers and both old and new records are present, the old ones should be removed immediately. Mixed records cause unpredictable email routing.

Important

MX record changes take up to 48 hours to propagate globally, depending on your TTL setting. If you’ve just updated your records and email isn’t working yet, check back in a few hours before assuming something is wrong.

For a full view of all DNS records alongside your MX configuration, use the DNS Lookup tool and select All Record Types. Once your MX records are confirmed correct, use the SPF Record Validator tool to check your SPF record is authorising the right mail servers to send on your behalf. For full email authentication combining SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, use the DMARC Record Generator tool to create a policy that protects your domain from spoofing. If email delivery issues persist, our website maintenance Sydney team can diagnose and fix DNS and email configuration problems.
