Step-by-Step: How to Use the One-Time Secret Share Tool
Step 1: Enter the sensitive information you need to share in the text box. Passwords, API keys, database credentials, server logins, licence keys, any confidential detail that shouldn’t be sent in plain text. The tool accepts up to 50,000 characters.
Step 2: Add a password (optional but recommended). If you set a password, your recipient needs to enter it before the secret is revealed. Send the password to them via a separate channel, a phone call, a different messaging app, or an in-person conversation. This means that even if the link is intercepted, it’s useless without the password.
Step 3: Set your expiry time. For credentials someone needs to use immediately, 1-6 hours is the right choice. For information that needs to be accessible over a few days, such as onboarding a new team member, choose 24 hours or 3 days. Once the time expires, the link no longer works even if it was never viewed.
Step 4: Click ‘Create Secret Link’. The tool generates a unique, single-use URL.
Step 5: Send the link to your recipient via email, Slack, Teams, or any other messaging channel. The channel doesn’t need to be secure, the security is in the link itself, not the delivery method.
Step 6: The recipient clicks the link, enters the password if you set one, and sees the secret once. After viewing, it’s permanently destroyed. The link immediately shows ‘Secret Not Found’ for anyone who tries to open it again.
If the link shows ‘Secret Not Found’: the most likely cause is that it was already viewed, or it expired before the recipient accessed it. Simply create a new secret, the process takes under 30 seconds.
NoteThis tool is end-to-end encrypted. The secret content is never stored in readable form. Once destroyed, it cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. This is the secure way to share credentials with agencies, contractors, or new team members. |
Use the Secure Password Generator tool to create the strong credential first, then share it via this tool to complete a secure handoff. For a full guide to managing and sharing website access securely, see our website credentials best practices guide. When onboarding a new agency or contractor to your website, our website maintenance Sydney team follows this exact process as a standard security practice.
Why Use This to Send Credentials
A One-Time Secret Share Tool is essential for businesses that need to securely share sensitive information without leaving a digital footprint. It allows passwords, API keys, and confidential details to be shared via a single-use link that automatically expires after being accessed.
