Step-by-Step: How to Use the Suburbs Lookup Tool

The tool contains 15,323 Australian suburbs and supports seven different search modes. Choose the mode that matches how you’re thinking about your target area.

Search by Suburb Name

Use this for: quickly confirming whether a specific suburb exists and finding its postcode, state, LGA, and region.

Start typing the suburb name and select from the autocomplete list. Useful for national franchises where suburb names appear in multiple states, the results show the state code in brackets (e.g. Campbelltown (NSW), Campbelltown (SA)) to distinguish them.

Search by State

Use this for: returning every suburb in a given state.

Select the state from the dropdown. Combine with the Minimum Population filter to return only suburbs above a viable population threshold, useful for filtering out very small localities from a large targeting list.

Search by Region

Use this for: targeting suburbs within a statistical region (based on ABS geographic boundaries).

Useful for media planning, franchise territory mapping, and any campaign where your target area aligns with an ABS-defined region rather than a council or postcode boundary.

Search by LGA (Local Government Area)

Use this for: finding all suburbs within a council area.

Particularly useful for local government clients, real estate businesses, and service businesses whose delivery area matches council boundaries. Type the LGA name and select from the list.

Search by Postcode

Use this for: finding all suburbs that share a postcode.

Multiple suburbs can share one postcode. This mode is useful for validating postcode-to-suburb mappings in your CRM, Google Ads geotargeting setup, or database imports.

Search by Radius from Suburb

Use this for: finding every suburb within a set distance of a specific location.

Enter a suburb, set the radius in kilometres, and choose whether to return suburbs within the same state only or across all of Australia. Use the Exclusion Zone toggle to reverse the search, returning suburbs outside the radius instead of inside. This is ideal for service area mapping: ‘show me all suburbs within 30km of our Norwest office.’

Draw on Map

Use this for: highly custom service zones that don’t align with existing geographic boundaries.

Click the drawing tool, draw a polygon or rectangle over the map, and click ‘Search Suburbs in Drawn Area’. This mode is the most flexible, use it when a service territory has been defined by your own business rules rather than postcodes or council boundaries.

Exporting your results

Click ‘Export CSV’ to download the full results list. The CSV includes suburb name, state, postcode, region, and LGA, ready to import into Google Ads geotargeting, Meta audience lists, CRM territory assignments, or your Locations Plus page generation workflow.

Use the ‘Save URL’ button to generate a shareable link with your current search parameters baked in. Send it to a colleague or client so they can see the same suburb list without rebuilding the search.

Pro tip

For franchise networks, run a radius search centred on each franchisee’s location to define their territory. Export as CSV, then use that list to build geo-targeted ad campaigns and dedicated location pages for each territory.

The suburb lists you export here are the starting point for a Local SEO strategy, identifying which localities to build dedicated landing pages for and which search terms those pages should target. Our proprietary Locations Plus platform uses suburb data exactly like this to auto-generate SEO-optimised location pages at scale, ideal for franchises and multi-location service businesses. For franchise networks covering specific territories, the radius and LGA search modes make it straightforward to define and export the suburb footprint for each franchisee’s Franchise SEO services campaign.
